今回の地震は多くの死傷者を出してはいるものの、昨年ハイチを襲った大地震の700倍という大きさににも関わらず、ハイチでは22万人以上の死者を出しているのに比べれば、その被害は少なく済んでおり、それは地震、津波への意識、対策が高い日本だからこそであったと海外メディアはレポート。アメリカ地質研究所のデイビッド・アップルゲート氏は「このレベルの地震に耐えられるとすれば対策がしっかりとされている日本くらいだ。」とコメントしている。

この地震のエネルギーはアメリカの１ヶ月の消費エネルギー程度という凄まじさで、今回のこの地震により本州は東に243センチ（8フィート）動いたとアメリカ地質研究所は発表している。またNASAによれば地球の自転も1000万分の16秒早まったといい、この地震の大きさがうかがえる。
